New Mobility Solution: Ceiling Hoist
A hoist is a device used for lifting or lowering a load by means of a drum or lift-wheel around which rope or chain wraps. It may be manually operated, electrically or pneumatically driven and may use chain, fiber or wire rope as its lifting medium. The most familiar form is an elevator, the car of which is raised and lowered by a hoist mechanism. Most hoists couple to their loads using a lifting hook.
A new-build Strathmore school has placed accessibility center stage in response to the local area’s growing need to support students with special educational needs.
The solutions, which were installed to span three classrooms, a sensory room, a soft play area and a hygiene room. The track hoist system runs across the ceiling, so takes up no floor space, and doesn’t impinge on the room being occupied by able guests. The solutions specialist installed a ceiling hoist, with the assistance of a local contractor, to offer a compact and quiet transfer solution across all of the mobility-enabled areas. The new hoisting systems enable disabled students to access experiences that might otherwise have been kept from them. Not only will these encourage development but also, and most importantly, they encourage a fun environment at school.
